Jeffrey Matthews, MD, FACS, discusses his department and field.
JEFFREY B. MATTHEWS: My name's Dr. Jeff Matthews. I'm the chairman of surgery and surgeon-in-chief at the University of Chicago Medicine. By training, I'm a gastrointestinal surgeon. I specialize in diseases of the pancreas, liver, and bile ducts but mostly focus on the pancreas. I take care of patients with a wide range of diseases of the pancreas, both benign and malignant diseases, ranging from acute and chronic pancreatitis to pancreas cancer. At the University of Chicago we have a multidisciplinary pancreas center, as well as a dedicated gastrointestinal cancer program. And we work together in a multidisciplinary way with colleagues in interventional gastroenterology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and interventional radiology, as well as specialized nurses to bring a full gamut of ability to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with complex diseases of the pancreas.
