Ben Roitberg
Dr. Ben Z. Roitberg is a neurosurgeon with expertise in spine surgery -- including cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine procedures. He is skilled in the surgical treatment of disc disease, stenosis, myelopathy, radiculopathy, instability, lower back pain and other spine problems. Additionally, he specializes in the surgical management of: tumors of the spine and brain; neurological trauma; Chiari malformation; peripheral nerve entrapments; tumors and injuries; and neurovascular conditions -- including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and cavernomas.
Dr. Roitberg has more than 25 years of experience and training in neurosurgery. Also an active researcher, he leads multidisciplinary clinical studies focused on improving outcomes of neurosurgical patients with diseases of the spine. In his laboratory, Dr. Roitberg examines the characteristics of nerve cells after transplantation into stroke models to determine if neurological function is improved after transplant. He is currently studying methods to accelerate recovery after spinal cord injury.
His most current research topics include:
- Outcomes of spine surgery and neurosurgical intensive care
- Neurosurgical training, including virtual reality surgery, surgical stimulation, and mission rehearsal
- Repair of spinal cord injury and brain injury
Dr. Roitberg is also editor-in-chief of the journal Neurological Research.
