John Renz, MD, PhD
Professor of Surgery
John Renz, MD, PhD, is an expert in adult and pediatric abdominal organ transplantation. A member of the multidisciplinary University of Chicago transplant team, he performs all types of liver transplantation, including whole organ, split-liver, and living donor procedures.
Dr. Renz is nationally recognized for his research on donor organs that do not meet the usual conditions for transplantation due to various health concerns. He conducted a study, which found that these organs can still be healthy enough for successful transplantation. As a result, Dr. Renz's "extended-donor criteria" expanded the donor pool, increasing access to liver transplantation for many patients.
Additionally, he has published dozens of articles on the subject of liver transplantation in medical and scientific journals. Dr. Renz serves on the editorial board of Liver Transplantation, and as a reviewer for several medical journals, including the American Journal of Transplantation, Clinical Transplantation and Hepatology.
