Marco Patti, FACS, MD
Professor of Surgery
Marco G. Patti, MD, is an internationally known gastrointestinal surgeon who has extensive expertise in the surgical treatment of esophageal disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia and esophageal cancer. Under his leadership, the multidisciplinary Center for Esophageal Diseases brings together physicians and researchers to provide patients with advanced treatment options and resources.
Dr. Patti has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery to treat esophageal conditions. Minimally invasive surgery is performed through very small incisions with the use of specialized instruments and miniature cameras. This approach has many benefits for patients, including a quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay and minimal scarring.
Dr. Patti's research focuses on the relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease and respiratory disorders. Together with Dr. Imre Noth, Dr. Patti has investigated the pathophysiology of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Their work is part of a multi-center phase II trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
A prolific author, Dr. Patti has published more than 260 journal articles and book chapters -- as well as several textbooks -- on esophageal surgery and minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery. He serves on the editorial boards of Annals of Surgery, World Journal of Gastroenterology, Diseases of the Esophagus, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and World Journal of Surgery.
Dr. Patti has given more than 270 presentations at universities and scientific meetings throughout the world. In addition, he has served as a visiting professor at several prominent universities in Italy, Canada, China and the United States. He is past president of the International Society of Digestive Surgery and president elect of the International Society of Surgery.
